하이든은 「천지 창조」를 작곡했을 때 만큼 경건한 기분에 감동받은 적은 없었다고 하며 그는 매일 무릎을 꿇고 신이 이 사업을 가호해 주실 것을 기원했다고 말했는데, 사실 그의 5개의 오라토리오 중에서 가장 뛰어나며, 또 헨델의 「메시아」 · 멘델스존의 「엘리야」와 함께 최대 걸작의 하나로 꼽히고 있는 곡이다.
이 곡은 구약성서 「창세기」에서 제재와 가사를 따와 작곡한 것으로서, 1798년 4월 29~30일의 이틀 밤에 걸쳐 초연되었다. 신교도적 정신을 갖고 신을 찬미하고, 창조되는 천지 만물의 놀라움에 악상을 의탁한 작품이다. 가락은 찬연하고 표현이 깊어서 관현악의 명쾌분방함과 서로 어울려 더없이 장중하다.
하이든은 영국으로부터 빈으로 돌아오고 나서 음악에 일대 비약을 이루고 있는데, 「천지 창조」는 그러한 하이든을 입증하는 명곡이다. 스탕달은 그 저서에서 「천지 창조」를 격찬하면서 '어떤 대가도 「천지 창조」와 같은 명작을 만들지 못했다. 이것은 아마 오래도록 세상에 남을 것이다’라고 평하고 있다.
곡의 구성은 3부로 나뉘며, 제1부는 천지 창조의 처음 4일간의 이야기, 제2부는 제5일과 제6일의 이야기, 제3부는 낙원에 있는 아담과 이브의 이야기로 되어 있다. 유명한 시편 제19편의 「하늘은 하느님의 영광을 말하고」의 대합창은 제13곡으로 되어 있다. 하이든은 이전에 헨델의 「메시아」를 듣고 그 「할렐루야 코러스」에 커다란 감명을 받아 이 「천지 창조」를 쓰게 되었다고 전해지는데, 그야말로 「할렐루야 코러스」에 필적하는 대합창곡이다. 전곡의 연주에는 2시간 반을 요한다.
