1986년에 개봉한 영화 탑건의 후속작. 1편 탑건 이후 36년 만에 나온 후속작이다. 연출은 오블리비언과 트론: 새로운 시작의 연출을 맡은 조셉 코신스키. 원래 2020년 개봉 예정이었으나 코로나19 팬데믹으로 인해 개봉이 연기되었으며, 수많은 영화들이 끝내 극장 개봉을 포기하고 OTT 공개로 선회하는 가운데 극장을 통한 개봉을 꿋꿋히 고수하여 무려 23개월 간 개봉을 연기한 끝에 2022년 5월 27일에 개봉했다. 이후 평단의 호평과 함께 관객몰이를 했으며 개봉 31일 만에 총합 10억 달러 흥행 돌파 영화라는 기록을 세우며 2022년 상반기 최대 흥행작에 등극했다.
