Summertime from Opera "Porgy and Bess"

관현악 협주곡 '랩소디 인 블루'로 유명한 미국 작곡가 조지 거슈인(1898~1937년)의 오페라 '포기와 베스'에 나오는 '한 여름 밤(Summertime)'은 흑인 빈민가의 애환을 그린 이 오페라에서 어부 제이크의 아내 클라라가 아기를 재우며 부르는 자장가다.
불후의 명곡 ‘Summertime’은 많은 재즈 뮤지션들뿐만이 아니라 각계 각층의 다양한 음악인들로부터 자주 연주되곤 하는 너무나도 유명한 곡이다. 곡의 가사는 1925년 발표된 뒤보즈 헤이워드(DuBose Heyward)의 원작 소설 ‘Porgy'를 바탕으로 하고 있다. 언제 들어도 쓸쓸하고 허전하게만 느껴지는 곡의 선율과는 달리 다분히 동화적이고 낭만적인 내용의 노랫말이 다소 이색적이다.
