헨델은 수많은 이탈리아 오페라들을 양산하며 명성을 얻었고, 그 오페라에 대한 대중의 관심이 씨들해질 즈음 심혈을 기울인 또 하나의 음악양식이 바로 영어 오라토리오이다. 그렇한 헨델의 오라토리오는 무대연출에 소요되는 막대한 비용을 절약할 수 있고 영국인이 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 텍스트를 제공한다는 측면에서 매우 실용적인 장르였다. 내용은 종교적인 면과 오락적인 면이 혼합되고 주로 영국의 개신교도들의 감수성에 어필할 수 있는 것들로 구성되었다. 작품소재는 주로 성경적이 것이었으나 간혹 신화적인 내용도 재료가 되었다. 이탈리아적인 선율, 강력한 합창 포스와 드라마틱한 요소는 대중에게 매우 매력적인 요인이 되었다.
1736년에 1월에 완성된 오라토리오 '알렉산더의 향연'의 텍스트는 존 드라이든의 동명의 시(1697)를 기반으로 한다. 초연은 같은 해 2월에 코벤트 가든 극장에서 이루어졌다. 제레미아 클라크가 작업한 오리지널 텍스트를 뉴버그 해밀턴이 레치타티브, 아리아 및 합창으로 구분하고 마지막에 합창을 하나 추가하여 최종 완성하였다. 헨델은 초연이후 필요에 따라 본 작품에 여러 차례의 수정을 가하였다. 오리지널판에는 세 곡의 콘체르토 즉, 레치타티보 "Timotheus, plac'd on high plac’d on high"에 이어 연주되었던 <하프, 류트, 리리코드 및 여러 악기를 위한 콘체르토 HWV 294>, 파트 I 과 II 사이에 연주되었고 "Concerto in Alexander's Feast" 로 알려진 <합주협주곡 HWV 318> 그리고 파트 II 의 합창 "Let old Timotheus yield the prize"후에 연주되었던 <오르간 콘체르토 HWV 289>가 삽입되어 있었다고 한다.
작품의 내용은 페르시아 정복을 축하하기 위한 향연중 벌어지는 알렉산더 대왕의 일화를 소재로 한다. 음악가 디모테오가 향연중 연주하는 일련의 여러 음악들을 통해 알렉산더 대왕, 알렉산더의 연인 타이스 및 군중들의 다양한 감정을 불러일으키고 행동을 조종하는 일련의 과정들을 묘사하고 있다. 부제 '음악의 힘' 이 시사하듯 음악의 다양한 묘사와 연주로 변화무쌍하게 분위기를 바꾸고 군중의 심리를 자극하는 등 인간에게 끼치는 음악의 능력과 영향을 다양하게 보여주고 있다.
