Jephtha, HWV70

구약성경 사사기 11장에 나오는 입다(Jephtha)의 이야기는 고전 드라마로서 대단히 적합한 스토리이다. 헨델은 입다와 그의 딸 이피스(Iphis)에 대한 스토리를 오라토리오로 작곡했다. 당시에 오라토리오는 무대배경과 의상을 완벽하게 준비하고 공연했다. 그러나 초연 때에는 여러 여건상 의상과 배경을 준비하지 못했다. 훗날 헨델의 오라토리오 ‘입다’는 오페라로서 손색이 없게 되어 준오페라로서 인정받고 있다. 헨델은 약 30편의 (정확하게는 28편) 오라토리오를 작곡했다. 그중에서 일부는 오페라의 대우를 받고 있다. 예를 들면 Acis and Galatea(아치스와 갈라테아), Semele(세멜레), Judas Maccabaeus(유다스 마카베우스), 그리고 Jephtha(입다) 등이다.
헨델이 오라토리오 입다를 작곡할 당시에 그는 시력을 점차 잃고 있었다. 그래서 사람들은 ‘입다’가 그의 마지막 작품이 될것이라는 얘기까지 했다. 실제로 헨델도 ‘입다’를 마지막 작품으로 생각했던것 같다. 헨델이 ‘입다’의 마지막 합창곡인 How dark, o Lord are the decrees(얼마나 어두운가, 오 주의 뜻인가)를 끝내고 나서 악보 말미에 ‘여기까지 1751년 2월 13일 도달하였다’라고 쓴 것만 보아도 짐작할수 있다. ‘입다’에 나오는 유명한 아리아인 Waft her, angels, thro' the skies(가볍게 나를 지어다, 천사들이여 하늘로)는 헨델이 작곡한 곡 중에서 가장 아름다운 것이다.
줄거리
길르앗 사람 입다는 기생의 아들이기 때문에 다른 형제들의 핍박을 받아 집에서 쫓겨나 멀리 가서 살고 있다. 그러한 때에 암몬 자손들의 이스라엘을 침범한다. 이스라엘은 어찌할 줄 몰라서 전전긍긍이다. 이스라엘의 장로들이 입다(Jephtha)를 찾아가 암몬 자손들의 침범을 막아 달라고 간청한다. 입다는 ‘어찌하여 전에는 나를 내쫓더니 이제는 도와달라고 하나?’면서 거절한다. 이에 장로들은 과거의 잘못을 염두에 두지 말것을 간청하고 우선 입다를 그들의 머리(사사: 판관)로 삼는다. 이에 입다는 허락하고 길르앗으로 입성한다. 입다는 암몬 자손들과 전투를 하기 전에 하나님께 기도하기를 만일 암몬 자손들을 물리치고 편안히 돌아오게 해주시면 누구든지 나의 집 문앞에 나와 처음으로 나를 영접하는 사람을 여호와께 제물로 바치겠다고 서약한다.
