Come Again, Sweet Love Doth Now Invite
John Dowland 1563~1626
후기 르네상스 시기에 태어나 초기 바로크 시대에 활약한 J. Dowland는 유럽 전역에서 류트 연주가로 명성을 떨쳤으며, 초기 예술가곡의 발전에 기여한 역사상 중요한 위치를 차지한 작곡가이다. 그는 80여곡의 성악곡을 통해 영국의 엘리자베스 왕조의 센티멘트와 유머를 노래 하였으며, 근대 가곡의 길을 열어 주었다.
연주곡들은 모두 Lute반주에 의한 사랑의 노래로써 작자미상인 시에 곡을 붙인 것이다. 그의 가곡의 특징들을 살펴보자면 첫째, 부분(section)형식으로 되어있다. 둘째, 박자기호 표시가 없다. 셋째, 시의 운율상 마디가 불규칙하다. 즉 2박자와 3박자가 교체된다. 넷째, '민감한 가사 낭송과 선율의 미묘함이 놀랍다'. 다섯째, 좁은 음역의 곡들이다.
이 곡은 lute반주에 의한 사랑의 노래로, 1597년에 작곡되었다. 박자 기호표시가 없으며, 두개의 7소절로 구성된 악구가 결합된 한부분(section)형식으로 되어있다. 이 곡에서는 시의 운율이 불규칙하기 때문에 불규칙 구조의 악구(irregular phrase)를 가진다. 즉, 2박자와 3박자가 자유롭게 교체되면서 강조되는 단어를 강박에 둔 것이 특징적이다.

Thy graces that refrain, to do me due delight.
To see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die,
with thee again in sweetest sympathy.
Come again, that I may cease to mourn.
Through thy unkind disdain, for now left and forlorn.
I sit, I sigh, I weep, I faint, I die,
in deadly pain and endless misery.
All the day, the sun that lends me shine,
By frowns do cause me pine, and feeds me with delay.
Her smiles, my springs, that makes, my joys, to grow,
her frowns the winters of my woe.
All the night, my sleeps are full of dreams,
My eyes are full of streams, my heart takes no delight.
To see, the fruits, and joys, that some, do find,
and mark the storms are me assigned.
Out alas, my faith is ever true.
Yet will she never rue, nor yield me any grace.
Her eyes, of fire, her heart, of flint, is made,
whom tears nor truth may once invade.
Gentle love, draw forth thy wounding dart.
Thou canst not pierce her heart, for I that do approve.
By sighs, and tears, more hot, than are, thy shafts,
did tempt while she for triumph laughs.
