영화 '백야'는 1985년에 미국에서 제작되었고 우리 한국에서는 1986년 9월에 개봉되었던 벌써 35년이 넘은 오래된 영화이지만 분명 이 영화는 명화이다. 세계적인 명 여배우 헬렌 미렌의 남편이자 <어게 인스트><라밤바>그리고 <레이>등을 제작, 감독하여 아내 못지 않은 명성을 가지고 미국 아카데미 영화상 트로피를 거머쥐었던 '테일러 핵포드' 감독이 메가폰을 잡았고 세기의 발레리노 '미하일 바리시니코프'와 그레고리 하인즈 쇼의 진행자이자 토니상을 수상했던 '그레고리 하인즈' 그리고 잉그리드 버그만의 딸로서 세기의 미녀인 '이사벨라 로셀리니'가 주연하여 세계인의 가슴 속에 커다란 감동을 선사했던 영화 <백야>의 영화이야기를 소개해 본다.
영화의 시놉시스는 매우 단순하다 소련을 탈출하여 미국으로 망명했던 세기적인 발레르노 니콜라이(미하일 바리시니코프 분)가 동경으로 공연을 가던 중에 비행기 추락사건으로 소련영토에 불시착하는 바람에 소련의 정보기관에 붙잡히게 되고 그곳에서 베트남 전쟁에 항의하여 소련으로 망명한 미국 출신 흑인 댄서 레이몬드(그레고리 하인즈 분)와 그의 러시아인 아내 다냐(이사벨라 로셀리니)를 만나서 같이 공연을 하다가 자본주의적 자유와 사회주의적 평등이라는 이념적 갈등의 혼선으로 처음에는 불화하다가 결국 현실적인 삶의 진정성을 추구하는 과정에서 자유이념의 가치를 선택하고 함께 소련을 탈출한다는 내용이다.
그리고 이 영화 주제곡으로 삽입된 라이오넬 리치가 부른 'Say You Say Me'는 영화 만큼이나 유명한 곡으로서 그해 아카데미 주제가상을 받았고 빌보드 챠트에서 무려 4주 동안이나 1위를 차지한 곡이다.
