1982년 11월 30일에 발매된 앨범 Thriller에 수록된 마이클 잭슨의 노래. 1983년 1월 2일에 싱글이 발매되었다. 마이클 잭슨을 상징하는 곡이라고 할 수 있는 노래로, 앨범 Thriller가 역사상 가장 많이 팔린 앨범이 되는 데에 큰 기여를 했으며 대중음악사에서 가장 위대한 명곡 중 하나로 자주 꼽힌다.

 

Billie Jean은 1980년대 마이클 잭슨을 국제적인 슈퍼스타로 만들었고, 잭슨 이전에 존재했던 대중음악의 위대한 음악가들과 그 위상을 나란히 하게 했다. 또한 백인 중심의 음악적 흐름을 흑인이 탈환하게 되는 결정적 계기가 됐다. 1984년 그래미 어워드에서 남자 R&B 가수상과 R&B 신곡상을 수상했다.

 

미국 빌보드 싱글차트에서 7주간 1위, UK 싱글차트에서 2주간 1위를 차지했다. 또한 스위스, 스페인, 이탈리아에서도 1위, 오스트리아, 뉴질랜드, 노르웨이, 스웨덴에서도 모두 TOP 10 안에 안착한 명실공히 세계적인 베스트 셀러 싱글이다. 그 외 1989년 미국의 음반 산업 협회에서 플래티넘 인증을 받았다.

 

'롤링 스톤 선정 인류 역사상 가장 위대한 노래 500곡'에서 58위를 차지했으며 'New Musical Express 선정 글로벌 베스트 곡'에서 3위, 2003년 'VH1의 지난 25년 중 가장 훌륭한 곡 TOP 100'에서 2위를 차지하였다.[1] 그 외에도 BBC Radio가 선정한 '가장 위대한 댄스 뮤직 greatest dance record of all time'에서 1위, 음악 전문 채널 VH1의 '역사상 가장 위대한 궁극의 No.1'에서도 1위로 선택되었다. 또한 '롤링 스톤과 MTV가 선정한 1963년 이후 가장 위대한 노래' 리스트에서 6위를 차지하였다.
