스웨덴 출신의 보컬 쿼테트(Quartette) 그룹인 아바(ABBA)는, 두 쌍의 부부 그룹으로써 1974년에 유로비전 송 콘테스트에서 ＜Waterloo＞란 곡이 그랑프리를 수상하면서 세계적인 스탠더드 팝 그룹으로 발전했다.

 

유럽 일대에서는 ‘아바 마니아’라는 말이 생길 정도로 붐을 일으켰던 아바는, 1975년 경에는 비행기 사고로 자신들이 죽었다는 루머가 퍼져 혼란 속에 빠지기도 했었다. 1975년에는 ＜S. O. S＞와 ＜Mamma Mia＞로, 다음해인 1976년에는 ＜Fernando＞, ＜Dancing Queen＞, ＜Honey, Honey＞, 1977년에는 ＜Knowing Me, Knowing You＞, ＜Name of The Game＞, 1978년에는 ＜Summer Night City＞, 1979년에는 ＜Voulez Vous＞, ＜Gimme, Gimme, Gimme＞ 등 발표하는 수많은 곡마다 전 세계 팝 팬들을 매료시켰으며, 영국, 미국 등 각국의 인기 차트에서는 이들의 이름이 떠날 줄 몰랐다.

 

1971년 7월에 결혼한 아그네사와 비요른은 1979년 1월에 이혼 성명을 발표하였으며, 1978년 7월에 결혼한 후리다와 베니는 1981년에 이혼을 발표해, 평소 자신들을 좋아하던 팬들을 실망시키기도 했지만, 그룹 활동은 계속하여 1980년에 「Super Trouper」란 앨범과 1981년에는 「The Visitors」 같은 앨범을 발표해 건재함을 과시하기도 했다.
