Coronation Anthems (4) for chorus & orchestra, HWV 258-261
헨델이 조지 2세와 캐롤라인 왕비의 대관식에 사용될 송가 네 곡을 의뢰 받게 된 데에는 분명 왕실의 입김이 작용했을 것이다. 그도 그럴 것이 의뢰가 있기 겨우 며칠 전에 왕실 예배당의 오르간 주자 겸 작곡가로 모리스 그린이 임명되었기 때문이다. 의뢰를 받은 것은 영광이었지만 몇 가지 문제가 발생했다. 헨델은 고작 두 주 동안 곡을 쓰고, 여러 성부의 악보 사본을 제작하고 리허설까지 마쳐야 했다. 그러니 캔터베리 대주교가 일기에 쓴 것처럼, 공연이 여기저기 삐걱댄 것도 무리가 아니었다. 그러나 이 송가들은 훗날 오라토리오인 《에스더》와 《데보라》에 편입되어 더 많이 연주되었다. 《사제장 사독》은 1727년 이후로 영국의 대관식에서 연주되고 있다.
네 곡의 송가 중 세 곡은 성부를 완전히 갖춘 합창단과 관현악을 위한 곡이다. 특히, 오보에, 바순과 현악기들을 보완하는 트럼펫과 드럼까지 편성되어 있다. 헨델은 가사를 화려하게 쓰고 극적인 배경을 설정했다.
