Messiah, HWV 56
[메시아]는 헨델의 많은 작품들 가운데 일반인들에 가장 친숙한 곡이다. 또한 성탄절에 즐겨 연주되고 있어 연말 분위기를 나타내는 음악이기도 하다.
헨델의 [메시아]는 모두 3부로 구성되었다. 제1부는 예언과 탄생, 제2부는 ‘수난과 속죄’, 제3부는 ‘부활과 영생’의 내용을 담고 있다.
오라토리오가 대개 그러하듯, 헨델의 [메시아]도 오케스트라가 연주하는 서곡으로 시작해, 아리아와 중창, 레치타티보, 합창 등 여러 형태의 노래가 나타나며 청중에게 다양한 인상을 전해준다. 헨델의 오라토리오는 특히 선율이 아름답고 화성이 명확하며 여러 성격의 음악이 대비되어 청중에게 즉각 다가가는 것이 장점이다.
헨델은 특히 합창에 있어 타의 추종을 불허한다. [메시아] 중에도 매우 뛰어난 합창곡들이 많은데 그 중에서도 제2부의 마지막을 장식하는 합창 ‘할렐루야’가 가장 유명하다. [메시아]의 영국 초연 당시 국왕 조지 2세가 ‘할렐루야’의 장엄한 합창을 듣고 너무 놀라 벌떡 일어났다는 일화는 유명하다. 그래서 오늘날에도 [메시아] 중 ‘할렐루야’ 합창이 연주될 때는 청중 모두 기립하는 것이 전통으로 남아있다.
