리차드 쳄벌레인(Richard Chamberlain)과 디온 워익(Dionne Warwick)에 의해 1963년 레코딩 되었던 곡으로 1970년 카펜터스에 의해 발표되면서 널리 알려지게 된 곡이다. 빌보드 Hot 100 차트 4주간 1위곡으로 1971년 카펜터스에게 최초(통산 3번째)의 그래미상 (Best Contemporary Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus )을 안겨준 곡이기도 하다.

 

(They Long to Be) Close to You" 의 싱글 발매 후 좋은 반응을 얻자 그간 공연 등에서 발표되었던 나머지 곡들을 정리하여 「Close to You」라는 앨범으로 발매하면서 US 빌보드 앨범차트 2위에 오르고, 또한 영국에서는 76주동안 공식 앨범차트 Top 50 이내에 위치한다.
